MMIA Awards 2023

Celebrating the strength and diversity of the maritime industry, worth over £5bn in the Liverpool City Region, the Mersey Maritime Industry Awards (MMIA) was a spectacular Awards evening held in the iconic Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.

MSP provided full AV technical support for the event including sound, lighting, video and staging plus creative production of all the pre and post event content, awards slides and VT stings and the central LED totem video content.

Setting the stage

The client was keen to capture as much of the atmosphere and architectural splendour of the venue as possible and the stage set was designed to reflect this. The MSP team created a portrait custom resolution LED video Totem using DMT 4.6mm LED Video wall panels to create a narrow backdrop allowing the audience to “see” through the stage. The Totem was complimented by a Doughty H-Frame System either side featuring Chauvet Maverick Mk2 intelligent lights to create dazzling light and haze effects to welcome the 12 category winners to the stage to collect their awards.

Detailed soundscape

One of the world’s largest Cathedrals with dramatic high vaulted ceilings and hard sandstone walls, the venue presented a substantial acoustic challenge. The audience were seated along the length of the main hall so it was imperative that the sound was projected directly at them to prevent undue echo and reverberation from colouring the sound.

This was successfully addressed by MSP’s Nexo GEO M10 line array system comprising 12 M10 full range tops and 4 MSUB15s with PS 15 and PS12 in-fills, ensuring there were no dead spots within the room. With a lively and enthusiastic audience the vocals needed to be loud and clear whilst the musical acts and the award stings needed to be punchy and dynamic. The system delivered on all sides providing a detailed soundscape that heightened the excitement.

Light fantastic

The impressive interior of the Cathedral presented a perfect canvas for the MSP lighting team to create a vibrant, colourful environment for the Awards. A comprehensive LX rig of over 98 Chauvet, Prolight and Robe fixtures ensured the Cathedral had never looked better and provided dramatic theatrical scene changes to highlight the entertainment, dining and awards sections of the event.

Custom video

To ensure all the 600+ guests could see all the action, live camera relay was displayed onto two large 16:9 projection screens with 12k Epson laser projectors either side of the central stage. LCD repeater screens were distributed along the alcoves to make sure everyone could see the stage action.

As well as producing the animated awards logo loop with a custom resolution to match the format of the central video Totem, the team also filmed and edited all the nominee biography video inserts that were shown at the event. Filmed in the MSP Studios, each insert provided a short overview of these shortlisted that added extra dynamic to the ceremony.
